Boosting Home Energy Savings

Coastline Insulation gas and electricity costs, combined with the impact of climate change, make it more difficult for household budgets to stretch as far as they once did. Major energy improvements like solar panels or geothermal heat pumps require a bigger investment up front, but they can deliver significant long-term savings. In the meantime, there are a number of affordable steps you can take to reduce your energy consumption and lower your bills.

Upgrade insulation: Proper insulation helps maintain consistent indoor temperatures and reduces heating and cooling costs. Consider upgrading your attic, basement, and walls with blown-in or foam insulation. Install ENERGY STAR-labeled appliances: Appliances bearing the ENERGY STAR label meet stringent energy efficiency specifications and use less electricity than their older counterparts.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with LEDs, which use up to 90% less energy and last much longer. Install a programmable thermostat: A programmable or smart thermostat automatically adjusts the temperature of your home based on your schedule, reducing energy use when you’re away or asleep.

Keep a dehumidifier running during summer to reduce the need to crank up the AC. Turn off the lights when not using them and remember to switch off electronics, such as televisions and PVRs, at night. Unplug chargers, which continue to draw power if they are plugged in, and don’t forget to unplug all appliances and devices when not in use.

New Yorkers can receive no-cost home energy assessments and incentives to implement a variety of cost-effective energy efficiency upgrades, including air sealing and insulation. Check out NYSERDA’s Home Energy Efficiency Programs chart to see what options may be available in your area.
